An Ecological Form of Transport

The mission of the Autonomous Port of Paris is to promote ecological river transport in the Ile-de-France region by developing use of the ports, their facilities and management. All of this is being done with an eye on the various environmental issues.

The ecological edge of waterways

  • little noise pollution: river transport boasts the lowest noise emission levels
  • energy savings: per tonne, fuel consumption is 5 times less than for road haulage, hence a considerable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
  • reduced road congestion: a single 5,000-tonne convoy takes the equivalent of 250 20-tonne trucks off the road
  • low atmospheric pollution: river transport offers the lowest levels of atmospheric emissions
  • safety: accidents are particularly rare on waterways
  • lots of spare capacity in Ile de France: traffic can be tripled without extending the existing facilities

River transport is clean transport

It generates 2.5 times less in the way of CO2 emissions per tonne of goods transported than road transport. Each year, over 20 million tonnes of goods pass through the ports of Ile de France, representing some 1 million fewer trucks on the roads!
